Golf - Rookie Reed claims maiden US tour win

Patrick Reed won a battle of two of the US PGA Tour's best rookies to capture the $5.3million (£4.5m) Patrick Reed (AFP) Championship in a dramatic play-off on Sunday.Texan Reed, 23, birdied the second extra hole to beat Jordan Spieth at Sedgefield Country Club and secure his first victory on tour.

Reed carded a closing four-under-par 66 to tie with Spieth (65) at 14-under 266, two strokes ahead of John Huh, who bogeyed the final two holes, and Brian Harman.
Spieth, 20, was gunning for his second victory in his past four starts, after his breakthrough at the John Deere Classic last month.
He almost became the youngest two-time winner in the modern era on the PGA Tour, but his runner-up finish nonetheless confirmed his status as one of the game's rising stars.
Spieth, who had to lay-up with his second shot after a wild drive, sank a clutch 26-footer for par at the first extra hole to keep the play-off alive.
He looked to have the upper hand at the second extra hole after Reed sprayed his tee shot almost out-of-bounds at the par-four 10th.
But Reed conjured up some magic, firing his second shot to seven feet and he sank the birdie to win after Spieth missed a10-footer that shaved the hole but stayed out.

Jamaica won the women's 4x100m relay as the United States messed up a changeover at the World Championships at the Luzhniki Stadium

France took silver while the Americans recovered from a dreadful second baton exchange to pip Britain to bronze.
Double sprint champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce led the Jamaicans home for her third gold in a national and championship record time of 41.29, while Britain - who had been second at the start of the anchor leg - initially missed out on a medal as the inexperienced Hayley Jones faded badly in the home strait.
But France, who got silver, were disqualified and Britain got their bronze.
The Jamaica quartet of Carrie Russell, Kerron Stewart, Schillonie Calvert and Fraser-Pryce streaked to gold in 41.29, the second fastest time ever run.
A mishap on the second and third interchange between Alexandria Anderson and English Gardner who started her run too soon and had to halt to grasp the baton, effectively ended U.S. victory hopes.
France came second in 42.73 and it was only a storming final leg from Octavious Freeman that secured an unlikely American bronze, Freeman eating up ground down the home straight with a sizzling run to get into to a medal position.
The U.S. set a stunning world record of 40.82 at the London 2012 Olympic Games but none of that victorious quartet featured in the Moscow final, notably Allyson Felix who tore a hamstring in the 200m final and 100m bronze medal winner Carmelita Jeter who was left out

Premier League - Roma striker Osvaldo joins Southampton

Roma and Italy striker Pablo Osvaldo has joined Southampton, the Premier League club have announcedRoma forward Pablo Daniel Osvaldo celebrates (AFP)The 27-year-old Italy international has long been linked with a move to the Premier League, with Manchester City and Tottenham reportedly interested.

However, it is Southampton that have won the battle for Osvaldo's signature, paying an undisclosed fee in excess of the £12.5million they forked out last month for Celtic midfielder Victor Wanyama.
Osvaldo worked with Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino when the pair were at Espanyol, although getting him to the south coast took some persuasion.
The Argentinian-born forward, though, has now penned a four-year deal at St Mary's, with the fee set to be confirmed to the Italian stock exchange by Roma on Monday.
"Southampton Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Italy striker Pablo Daniel Osvaldo," a statement on the club's official website, www.saintsfc.co.uk, said.
"Osvaldo today agreed terms on a four-year contract with Saints and moves from Serie A side AS Roma. The frontman is expected to be available for next Saturday's Barclays Premier League game against Sunderland at St Mary's, and will be officially presented as a Southampton player tomorrow (Monday)."
Osvaldo becomes Southampton's third signing of the summer, following an £8.5million move for Lyon defender Dejan Lovren and the signing of Kenyan midfielder Wanyama.
Southampton won their opening match of the season at West Brom on Saturday , with a late Rickie Lambert penalty securing a 1-0 victory.

Motorcycling - Marquez wins Indianapolis GP

Spain's Marc Marquez extended his lead in the MotoGP world championship after another convincing victory in Sunday's Indianapolis Grand Prix.

Marc Marquez (Reuters)The polesitting Honda rider dropped to third at the start as Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa got off the line much better.
The title-contending trio then ran in very close company for the first half of the race.
Marquez eventually got ahead of his Honda team-mate with a clever move on the infield, but Lorenzo's Yamaha clung on at the front until half-distance, when Marquez slipped through into Turn 2.
Contrary to expectations, Marquez did not immediately disappear when in the lead, but going into the closing stages he was able to stretch his legs, winning by three and a half seconds.
Pedrosa made it a Honda one-two when he drafted past the fading Lorenzo with two laps left.
Valentino Rossi made a muted start to the race and took his time to work forward from 10th.
But by the end of the race he had caught the battling Cal Crutchlow and Alvaro Bautista. Some incredible and forceful racing resulted before Rossi grabbed fourth on the line by just 0.060s from Crutchlow.
Behind the lonely Stefan Bradl, the Ducatis' race-long battle got even more wild.
Contact between Nicky Hayden and Andrea Dovizioso at the final corner sent both bouncing over the kerbs and allowed Bradley Smith - who had jumped to fourth at the start - to pip them both.
Aleix Espargaro recovered from his qualifying crash to beat Colin Edwards to CRT honours

World Championships - Bolt seals Moscow hat-trick as Jamaica win relay

Usain Bolt made it a hat-trick of World Championship golds as Jamaica won the men's 4x100m relay at thJamaica's Usain Bolt (C) crosses the finish line ahead of Britain's Dwain Chambers (L) and USA's Justin Gatlin (R) during the men's 4x100 metres relay final at the 2013 IAAF World Championships at the Luzhniki stadium in Moscow on August 18, 2013. AFPe Luzhniki Stadium. After winning the individual 100m and 200m titles, Bolt's task was made easier when American fourth-leg runner Justin Gatlin fluffed his start, stumbling and veering into the Jamaican's lane. The win rubber-stamped Bolt's place as the most successful athlete in world championship history, taking his all-time tally to eight. That matches American trio Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson and Allyson Felix but the world's fastest man moved ahead by virtue of his two silvers from 2007.

The Jamaican quartet of Nesta Carter, Kemar Bailey-Cole, Nickel Ashmeade and Bolt secured the Caribbean nation a hat-trick of world titles in a time of 37.36.
Gatlin brought home the U.S. in 37.66 with Canada upgraded to bronze after Britain were disqualified, continuing their relay woes of past championships in which they have often failed to get the baton around a full lap.
The Britons were penalised after a changeover mistake between Harry Aikines-Aryeetey and James Ellington who minutes earlier had told the BBC that the team had "got the changeovers down to a tee now".

In a career that has generated 54 singles titles, including 16 grand slams, Williams had won just about everything there is to win in her sport - but not Cincinnati, one of the WTA Tour's most prestigious tournaments.
Cincinnati will remain a hole on her resume for at least another year after Azarenka answered the challenge claiming just her third win in 15 tries against the 31-year-old American
